Mesenteric Arterial Duplex

The mesenteric arteries are the arteries that supply blood flow to the intestines and other abdominal organs. A Mesenteric Arterial Duplex Scan is an ultrasound test that shows the presence of plaque and the amount of blood flowing through the arteries.

In this examination, gel is applied to the skin on the abdomen. A transducer (a handheld device) is then used to scan the arteries to the intestines and abdominal organs. The images are are used to measure blood flow in each artery. This information demonstrates whether or not blood flow to the intestines is abnormal.
